What is Floragora doing to help NZ gardeners avoid spreading myrtle rust?

The myrtle rust incursion in NZ is likely the strain spreading through Australia, which is notable for its particularly wide host range - species at risk in NZ include Metrosideros, Kunzea, Leptospermum, Syzygium and Eucalyptus. Climate modelling indicates that much of the North Island and parts of the South Island are suitable for the development of the rust. NZ scientists (Scion) warned the NZ Govt on this in 2010, but little preparation has been done to quarantine and eradicate the Kerikeri incursion.

Thank you for the question. We have now made a pop-up message for anyone who logs in on Floragora.kiwi linking to the Ministry for Primary Industries’ alert regarding myrtle rust. No one will miss it as it appears for anyone who logs in, no matter if it is on their desktop, tablet or smartphone. Kind regards, Thomas (Floragora admin).
